John Howk

Penny Howk Beavers, a graduate of the University of Michigan, is a harpist specializing in contemporary popular music. She began her study of the harp at age five in her home in Joliet, Illinois, guided by her mother whose loving instruction provided a solid foundation for the future.

Her classical training began with Sister M. Charles of Joliet, further expanded at Interlochen National Music Camp under the guidance of Charles Kleinstuber, where she was a Concerto Winner in 1960, and with Ruth Dean Clark at the University of Michigan, earning her degree in Music Performance.

She has performed with many symphony orchestras in the U.S. and was appointed Principal Harpist with the Fresno Philharmonic Orchestra and Bear Valley Music Festival. She was also a recording harpist for movie scores at George Lucas' Skywalker Ranch for many years.

Penny performs and lectures throughout the United States and Europe, founded the Central California Chapter of the American Harp Society and has been active on the Board of Directors. She was the Banquet Soloist for the 25th American Harp Society National Convention in Denver, Colorado, has been a performer/lecturer for the Salvi Pop Festivals in Santa Barbara, California, the Florida Summer Harp Festival in Orlando, Florida and co-hosted and performed a special event at the International Pop and Jazz Harpfest in Tucson, Arizona. She also represented the US on a panel of guest speakers and performers at the World Harp Congress in Copenhagen, Denmark.

For many years, Penny has worked in well-known restaurants and hotels in San Francisco, Fresno, Oakhurst, Templeton and at the famous Hearst Castle. She has performed and recorded with many artists such as Johnny Mathis, Melissa Manchester, Linda Ronstadt, Natalie Cole, Marie Osmond and John Williams, and has worked for many years recording film soundtracks at George Lucas Skywalker Ranch.

Penny has a music ministry at her church, Cayucos Community Church, and was on the music staff at Northwest Church in Fresno for thirty years. Penny's own solo recordings include: “*Penny*”, “*Memories for Dad*”, “*Christmas with Penny*”, and “*Christmas Again with Penny*”. She also has her solo harp arrangements published by Vanderbilt Music Company. She is teaching privately and performing on the central coast, is a member of the Central Coast Wedding Professionals, the American Harp Society and the World Harp Congress.
